Quick review as I keep getting asked “have you been?”
I went on Friday night with friends and we had a good time, but then I always do with these friends. We had a very late table so didn’t eat until ten so were a little jaded and full of fizz by then. The service was a little grumpy and a bit slow but the food was very tasty. I failed to take notes but from memory we had tiny fried raviolis with a dip which were fab, crispy mushrooms again very yum. We all had pasta – mine with capers and tomato was firm and tasty. The best and most random dish was a very long bruschetta with smears of beetroot, soft cheese, cavalo nero and butternut squash alternating along it. It came on a wooden board plonked on two tins of posh tomatoes. Bit precarious but tasty.
The place was packed and full of couples who looked a bit bored with all the waiting but it was a massive improvement on the old Bell. The refurb looked good and would be a nice place to sit quietly with a coffee, but I doubt its ever going to be quiet.
I wish Jamie had gone more British being an Essex boy and left the italian to the Italians, but I am glad the dodgy Bell has been transformed. What do you think? Have you been?
